Frequently asked questions
about Travel Soccer

How far do players have to travel?
The amount of travel and distance involved depends largely on the coach and consensus of the parents. Any tournaments are decided on by the parents and the coach and vary greatly from Delaware or Chester County to Virginia Beach, VA..  Younger age groups (Under 9 and Under 10s) tend not to travel very far or often.

Doesn’t travel cost much more?
SCCSA charges $275.00 per year for U-9 and U-10, and $300 for U-12 and up to register for travel.  This fee is for the entire year and the only club fee. This fee covers league registration, insurance, equipment, referee fees, some training fees and tournament fees.  It also covers the cost of specialty clinics that we offer at no cost to the players, for example we have offered summer and spring goal-keeper training sessions at no additional costs to the player. Teams must purchase their own uniforms; some teams may do fund raising to purchase the uniforms.  Uniforms usually run less then $80.00.

When and where do they play travel games?
Most boys team play in the DELCO Fall league which plays most of their games on Saturdays.  Most girls teams play in the PAGS Fall league which plays most of their games on Sundays.  Some teams play in the Lanco Fall League. Away games are generally within a ½-hour distance of Unionville. All home games are played at local Unionville-Chadds Ford and Kennett schools.

Isn’t the competition much more serious at the travel level?
The leagues that we play in offer many levels of competition with Division 1 being the most competitive, Division 2 being a little less, Division 3 a little less, etc..  Our goal is to place each team in a division where they are competitive with their opponents.  This offers the best growth opportunity for the players. Tournaments also offer different levels of competition. The coach, the club and the parents dictate the level of competition and intensity of training schedules.

Do I have to give up other activities to play travel soccer?
Many players are able to balance several sports successfully. However, players do seem to be more committed to their travel teams and often stay together for consecutive years building friendships and team rapport. It is difficult to play travel and another sport simultaneously in the fall season.

Don’t travel teams play all year round?
Some teams do, some don’t. Most teams practice and perhaps enter tournaments in the summer to prepare for the fall season. They play in the league in the fall and generally practice twice per week. Some teams play indoors in the winter and an outdoor spring season.
